  • Rd 17 vs Springsure Mountainmen

Springsure made the trip over to play Emerald on the “Tigers Family Fun Day”. Will the heat kicking in and the beers flowing the day was enjoyed by a good Sunday footy crowd.

Springsure showed lots of passion for their jersey with strong defence and their forwards running with purpose. One forward running hard was 2012 Tiger Matthew Travers. The Tigers looked good in patches but sometimes made mistakes in succession. The Tigers had made a lot of changes due to work commitments and injury concerns.

This meant there was a few who had to stand up. Two of these were defensive second rowers Wade Campbell and Juston Cavanagh who both shared the 1 point. The Tigers only turned over the lead for the middle 20 mins and controlled the lead for the best part of the game. Springsure wouldn’t go away and their hits were still hard right up until the 80m mark. Tigers came away with a 28-18 win.

Old boys man of the Match went to Whetu Austin.

  • Rd 16 vs Blackwater Crushers

Tigers headed over to Blackwater with a few missing but had the depth to cover. The game started off with tit for tat footy. The game was hindered for 30 mins due to a serious injury to a Blackwater player. In a game with the forwards scoring the first half points and the backs picking up the points in the second half.

After the injury the local side skipped away with a few quick tries but Tigers scored enough to keep within reach. With 8 minutes to go Blackwater slotted a field goal to take the lead 29-22. A 60m special from Fijian Flyer Wanui Matainavora got the Tigers within a point with 3 mins to go. Blackwater lead for the entire game until Whetu Austin scored his second on the hooter off a Ricky O’Donnell inside ball. The game finished 32-29.

  • Rd 15 vs Middlemount Panthers

Tigers went into round 15 with a few hurdles to jump before the game ,missing some of our key players to both injury and work commitments . Lucky for us the u/ 18 players had the weekend off so it became a perfect opportunity to give these more then capable young men a chance to get some good game time in first grade . All three U / 18 players had a very big part on our success for this game (more…)

  • Bye Weekend- Money for Injuries

The Tigers rested up this week and did some fundraising towards an “Injured Players Fund” at the grand opening of Emerald Carpet Court and Harvey Norman. Tigers mens and ladies members ran a sausage sizzle over 2 days and raised a healthy amount to kick start this fund.

This fund is designed to assist seriously injured players when they are unable to work. This money will be a great help to players to assist with bills like car registrations, rent, weekly food etc. The payment amount and frequency will be determine on a case by case basis.

Massive thanks has to go to Coles Emerald for donating the sausages over the weekend. It was a huge help to not have to outlay the money for such an amount of sausages. Thanks Guys.

So we rest up for our next home game against Middlemount next week.

  • Rd 13 vs The Pirates

Headed to Tieri with a Hoodoo to break the Tigers put in one of their better performances of the year. The Tigers had not won at the Pirates home ground since 2010 and were keen to break the cycle.

The game started out with tit for tat scoring until the Pirates skipped out to 18-12 lead at the break. Losing Henry Watkins at the 30min mark with a knee injury the side took a little to regain their shape. After a halftime talk from Coach Catip about Ball Security and wining the ruck the green and whites started to dominate. With 15 mintues remaining it was 34-22. 3 long range tries were scored with some great displays of support play. The final score was 46-22 and the Hoodoo was broken.

Whetu Austin continues his incredible return to his old club featuring regularly on the scoresheet.

  • New A Graders in Good Form

So far in 2013 4 Tigers Juniors have Debuted for A Grade Tigers and have not disappointed. Each player adding to the Men’s team in their own way.

29 Connor Jones First to make their Debut was Connor Jones. He started well in his first match playing in the Duroux Shield. The Shield is the Tigers biggest game of the regular season against cross town rivals the Emerald Cowboys. He started off the bench but has now become a regular fixture in the team at Half/Five-Eight. Connor has impressed in both Rugby League and Union this year.  Just recently Connor was selected in the Bushrangers squad. This squad is picked out of  Rugby Union teams from  CQ, Far NQ, Mackay, Hervey Bay and Bundaberg. He has also represented Capricornia u18’s Union and Central United u18’s league. In September Connor is hoping to make the Queensland Country Squad when he faces off against Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, Darling Downs and Townsville at the State Titles.

25 Joshua Johnson Josh Johnston Debuted Against Last Years premiers Peak Downs Pirates. He Debuted well off the Bench and slotted into the back row well. His defence was solid making an impact. Lately a persistant leg injury has kept him out of the side. Josh also made the Bushrangers squad. Josh has just got back from Brisbane after receiving the “Pierre de Coubertin” award. This is given to School students how show leadership, sportsmanship and excellence in a variety of sports. Josh has also represented CH in league and union aswell as being in the Brisbane Broncos Elite Development program.

kobyKoby Scott was next to Debut. A late call up after being heavily involved in a 60 point win 2hrs earlier for his Junior side. Koby come off the bench into the hooker role and in one stint made 14 tackles in less then 10 mins. Koby was inline to come into the starting side the following week at hooker for A Grade due to injuries but a accident at training also sidelined him for several weeks. Soon to be back on the paddock for his junior club and pushing for A Grade selection.

sebby Sebastian Stiegler is the latest of the Debutants to where the Green and White. Sebby debuted on the wing against the previously undefeated 2012 minor premiers Clermont Bears. Understandably a big task, Sebby warmed to the occasion after being notified of his selection 20mins before the bus left and picking up his gear on the way. Starting on the wing he was tested early by the Bears halves putting up bombs and kicking to his corner. Sebby performed well and didn’t back down. His selection comes after good Junior form which warranted his Debut. In 2011 he represented the Queensland Indigenous squad.

His Brother Lloyd also Debuted for Tigers A Grade at 17 and was one of 3 sent to Brisbane to Join the East Tigers Colts system in 2011. This is a affiliate system which gives our juniors a pathway to higher levels footy in Brisbane. You may see some of these lads join that system if their on field and off field performance and work ethic warrants selection.

Another u18 Tiger trialled in 2012 and was invited into the 2014 East Tigers Colts system. Nick Devine trialled well at the end of 2012 but was not added to the 2013 Easts roster due to the side already being full. Nick is currently attending University in Brisbane. Because of his young age he was invited to join the Brisbane team the following year.

The affiliation with Easts Tigers has been a great leg up for our juniors and will continue. We have also welcomed back one of our 3 juniors placed into colts in 2011. Whetu Austin who played numerous games for the Brisbane club returned home on loan recently and has played great footy for the Tigers. Whetu has been on the scoreboard in every game and has also picked up doubles and a triple try haul.

  • Rd 12 vs Cowboys

    cowboys win

Tigers Men’s have gained revenge for their earlier loss in the season and jumping from 5th to 3rd on the ladder. At one stage it looked like the scoreline was going to blow out but fatigue had set in and the Green and Whites let in some late tries to close the final gap. Tigers lead 38-10 with 12 mins to go but the final score read 38-26.

The game saw some brilliant individual efforts. Whetu Austin showed picked up 3 tries which included an 80m try and a chip and chase to score. Ray Ebsworth also scored a 80m try and kicked a handful of goals. Wanui Matainavora made 3 line breaks but none as graceful as Tigers stalwart Joe Mahony. Arms and Legs swinging everywhere he gained 50 metres after busting the middle.

The Halves pairing of Connor Jones and Jake Madsen combined well steering the side around the park aswell as gaining previous ground with their outstanding kicking game. Plenty of go forward from the pack with strong bench players coming on regularly to bash the defensive line.

  • Season over for Tigers Ladies

An unfortunate end for the Tigers Ladies with a forfeit in the Grand Final Qualifier against Yeppoon Seagulls. With the Ladies team losing players to injuries and work/family commitments, Yeppoon took the forfeit and moved on to play Gladstone Raidettes next Saturday in the Final. Although a sad end to the girls season it has been a breakthrough one for them.

This year saw Ladies Rugby League feature in Emerald. The received wonderful support for the community and would like to thank everyone including their sponsors for 2013. The girls had a successful year all round. They have established a new club and supported it well with fundraising.

The Girls are looking forward to next year already and hope to gain more number to add depth to the team. If you are interested in joining a great club and making new friends contact Rheenie Devine on 0428 181 886.

The girls will still be doing meat trays on Sunday afternoons at the golf club so get down and support the Emerald Tigers Ladies for Season 2014.

  • Dysart Bulls and Fitzroy Gracemere Forfeited

Unfortunatly, the Dysart Bulls were unable to form a team for the Tigers home game. This will give the Tigers a rest which will help a few niggling injuries. The was a foreit in the Ladies first semi-final which will see the Tigers through to the next round of the finals. Gladstone defeated Yeppoon 8-6 so the Tigers Ladies will head to Yeppoon to fight for a spot in the Grand Final. It will also see the end of Fitzroy’s campaign for 2013.
