  • Ladies taste defeat in exhibition game

    10374093_537436446382022_7578088395178163189_n

The Emerald Tiger Ladies took to the field on Saturday afternoon in an attempt to take out the Central Highlands’ own State of Origin match. Running against a combined Clermont/Middlemount (North) team, the Tigers (made up of Emerald and Springsure players
    – South) put in a great effort despite coming out
on the bottom of the score board at the end of the
    game, 16-10.

Tarni Sullivan was the first of the South girls to get over the line, and put the first points on the board for the game. Maria Rawiri missed the conversion, putting the score at 4-0. Casey Watkins made a fabulous break and ran down 80m to score the other try for the South team, which Maria successfully
    converted.

The game was hard and fast, and with only a few slight hiccups. Most memorable was when Kristy Serotzki played the ball facing the wrong way, which was either ignored or missed by the ref. Bumps and bruises have been popping up all over Facebook, showing that, whilst the result has no bearing on the competition, the girls still played their hearts out, as a curtain raiser to the Allen Johnson memorial shield match, played between the Mountainmen and Panthers.

The game had particular importance for the Springsure girls, Casey Watkins, Sarah Thomas and Denise Chaplin who all knew Allen Johnson. Casey ran on wearing the number 11 jersey in Johnno’s memory and had one of her best games yet. The girls had a great night and after leaving with their first loss of the season, are determined to train harder to get the results in the next game in a
    fortnight against Middlemount.

  • Tigers Ladies show why their on top

    10409483_10152451072232920_7933848624234683517_n

For those of you that weren’t there (thanks to Ian Rankin from 4T consultants for coming to introduce yourself to the team), weekend just gone (14th June), saw us host the Clermont Bears and we knew that they would be out for revenge in front of our home crowd, as we had pinched a victory from them, in the earlier round 1 match up at Bear park (26th April score line 28 – 18).
We crossed for the first try scored by Casey Watkins, along with another three (scored by Maria Rawiri, Jess Bell and Tarni Sullivan), including 3 out of 4 conversions, saw the Emerald Tigers Ladies up at half time 24 – 0.
The second half saw a little bit more enterprise from the girls (which didn’t always pay off) and a breach in our defensive line, to have Clermont cross over and convert and bring the score to 24 – 6, but two more tries (one to Casey again and the other to Cooper Hill), saw the Emerald girls close out the match 32 – 6.
    Our players player and Old Boys player of the match went to Jenny Whittaker and our 3, 2,1 went;
    3 – Nickieta Kent (Lock)
    2 – Chantelle Nagel (2nd row)
1 – Jess Bell (Front row)
Jenny Whitaker also claimed the Oldboys player of the match
the game proved, that without your forwards pushing forward, you won’t get far.
  • Tigers mens hold out against the Crushers

10370993_10202805798080216_5128362297486399238_nTigers A Grade held out against the travelling Blackwater Crushers at the weekend. The Crushers have come off 2 solid wins after a slow start to the season.

Tigers were out of the blocks early with Tani Totau score down the right hand flank after 2 mins and Isaiah Huet scoring 8 mins later to take a 10-0 lead after as many minutes.

Isaiah Huet picked up his second try not long after with a dashing run down the left hand touch line but promoted it  to under the posts giving Ebsworth a easy conversion. Tigers lead 16-0 up untill a good try from Blackwater just before halftime to go into the break 16-6 to the home team.

The home side were slow to start the second half and made consecutive mistakes. Blackwater were unable to capitlize on the Tigers mistake riddled start to the second half and after 11 mins remaining in the game, Tani Totau grabbed a double for his birthday to make it 22-6. The momentum suddenly changed and the Crushers had continued possesion through mistakes and given penatly by Emerald.

Two quick tries and the Big Blackwater fowards were surging. The Tigers defence was exhausted after defending there own line for nearly 6 mins. With the score at 22-18 the game was anyones our Fijian Flyer Wanui Matainavora streaked down the left touch line beating 3 to score and seal the match. Tigers win 26-18 and go to equal second on the ladder.

  • Tigers bare Teeth Against Mountainmen

Tigers have rejoined the winners circle with a dominate 42-6 win over the Springsure Mountainmen at McIndoe Park at the weekend.

The Mountainmen came out strong and kept the Tigers on the back foot for the first 10 minutes. Handling errors were rife in the first quarter. The Tigers failed to complete their first 3 sets. The first try was almost scored twice by both teams before Tigers eventually crossing the white line 21 mins into the game. Ray Ebsworth crossed first and converted.

The Tigers improved in all departments for the last 15 mins of the first half picking up another 3 tries and keeping Springsure pointless at the break. 22-0 half time.

Springsure started the second half same as the first with solid defence and at times structured play. The green and whites had to wait 11 mins before their next point but from there went on to close out the match.

Springsure had a late concellation try through former Tiger David Brice. The final hooter went with Tigers picking up their first win of the season so far having a draw, a bye and a loss.

  • Bluff to Slick for Tigers

    vs bluff dv game

Tigers will be looking to back in the winners circle after a 48-20 loss to competition leaders Bluff Rabbitohs. Bluff proved too strong in most departments running away with it in the last 20 mins.

Tigers lost alot of experience in Ray Ebsworth, Josh Binnie, Darcy Darby,  Matt Langby, Brendon Kelly all being not available after representing the Central Highlands Rep team the week before. With Henry Watkins also unavailable Koby Scott got his first full A Grade game as hooker.

Debutants on the night were Jackson Morgan and Litani Totau. Both played well and will grow with time.

Tigers were behind on the scoreboard all night. The green and whites showed glimpses of top level footy but othertimes looked disjointed due to the number of changes in the side. Pete Eversham had a strong night up in the engine room. Points on the night went to

    Players Player- Pete Eversham
Old Boys Player of the match- Brendon O’Neill
    3 Sebastian Steigler
    2 Brendon O’Neill
    1 Kitione Saukuru

Tigers look to get back some of the rep players this weekend and put a strong performance in against a hard hitting springsure side. The game will kick off at 7pm this Saturday at McIndoe Park.

  • Rd1 Tigers vs Clermont Bears

Tigers hit the road for their first round game of the season. Celebrating Anzac Day and acknowledging the passing of a Life Member (Leonie Fysh) the both grades sported black arm bands in a mark of respect.

The Ladies were the first to hit the field and got out to a sluggish start. Clermont had better field position and ball control in the first half and showed that way on the scoreboard at halftime being 18-6 in favour of the bears. After the halftime break the Ladies showed more grit, determination and patience to gain the momentum of the game. The second half was a one sided after with our girls scoring 22 unanswered points to grab the first win of the season.

Casey Watkins grabbed a hat trick, Julie Murchie and Emma Holzwart picking a meat pie each. Goals kicked by Maria Rawiri, Denise Chaplin and Casey Watkins. The 3,2,1 for the game read 3 points Julie Murchie 2 Wendy Green 1 Casey Watkins. The  Injury concerns with Niketa Kent(knee) will be confirmed during the week.

The mens was up next and was a grand final rematch. The game did not dissapoint wit the biggest margin between them was 8 points during the game. The game was tit-for-tat and the momentum swung with both teams in different stages of the game and the points followed.

Halftime the Scoreboard read 16-14 to the Tigers. The bears hit back straight after halftime and looked the better team for the first 10 mins. The Tigers held their nerve and was patient and used their kicking game to swing momentum. Tigers picked up back to back tries to jump out in front.

Tigers 5/8 Brendon O’Neill was sin binned for 10mins for a professional foul. Brendon was forced to lay on the play as Clermont had a 4 man overlap. After O’Neill left the field the bears knocked the ball on which may have proved a very valuble play for the green and whites.

The game went down to the wire after the final hooter sounded the game was tied up at 36 all but the game was not quite finished. Another 90 secs was played as both sides went for the miracle plays. Both side had 2 chances each but went the ball went to ground it was declared a draw. Noone could say they didn’t get the gate fee’s worth.

Isaiah Huet let A Grade know of his arrival with monster metres and 3 tries. He was well supported by fellow team mate Sebby Steigler. Gavin Power was clincial on the wing picking up 2 tries. Other try scores on the night were Ray Ebsworth, Brendon Kelly. Ebsworth Converted 4 for the night. Izzy Huet was awarded the players player gong and 3 Points Darcy Darby 2 Ray Ebsworth 1 Ray Downie. Tigers have a few injuries to check out with Henry Watkins(knee), Josh Binnie(finger), Nathan Leef(knee), Sebby Steigler(concussion), Gav Power(shin) Ray Ebsworth(shoulder). Leef and Watkins are the only ones looking at multiple weeks.

Tigers would like to thank all of our loyal supporters for making the trip. Both teams have the bye next week so a weeks rest in order after a massive opening round.

  • Tigers beat Crushers in trial

    20140405_204856

Tigers made the trip to Blackwater for their final trial game of 2014. With both sides having extended bench’s it promised to be a fast and free-flowing game.

Blackwater got off to the perfect start with a try in the first minute on the back of a penalty and a mistake by Tigers. Tigers hit back quickly with Halfback Brendon Kelly scoring. Within 3 mins the Crushers had gone over again with communication in defence lacking from both sides.

The Tigers scored the next three tries through Matt Langby, Peter Harbord and Ray Ebsworth. The chance of momentum was partly on the back of front rower Josh Binnie hard running and sting in defence as one of the Blackwater players unfortunatly found out leaving the field to receive stitches after a collision with Josh.

Tigers hit the sheds for halftime leading 24-10. Blackwater scored 2 more tries in the first 15 mins of second half to give the Crushers a chance but the Tigers went on with it after a double by Ryan Home and a try to Kyle Mattingley. Ray Ebsworth was dynamic from the back and kicked well missing only 2 from 7. Brendon Kelly played well after making a few mistakes early but made up for it by steering the Tigers to a win.

Man of the Match which was sponsored by Emerald Air Starters and Equipment went to new halfback Brendon Kelly(3 points). Ray Ebsworth picked up the 2 points with a strirring performance at fullback and Josh Johnston grabbed his first points in A Grade with a well earned 1 point after being very busy all game.

  • Longreach 7’s(photo’s to go in gallery this week)

Longreach 7’s was a great success for both the mens and ladies teams. Both teams set off on Friday and hit Longreach late arv. The men’s team swagged it at the showgrounds(thanks to Tim Penrose) and the Ladies stayed at the Albert Park Motor Inn. The Tigers were very appreciative to the Albert Park and especially Longreach Rugby League for providing us with the Air Conditioned pavilion which gave us and a few other teams refuge from the flies and heat.

On the day the mens team were knocked out in the plate qualifier game against Normanton Stingers going down 18-12. The Ladies made it through to the Grand Final but went down to Clermont. On the injury front it was a pretty good day only losing 1 player from each side.

The winners on the day were our affiliate club the Eastern Suburb Tigers winning the Grand Final easily over the CQ Rangers. Brendans Replacements won the plate final.

Tigers would like to throw a big Thanks out to the following people Tim Penrose and Longreach R.L, Longreach R.S.L, Albert Park Motor Inn, the Holzwartz, Jason Lavis, Tigers Staff and Emerald Coaches. Over the weekend some of the Tigers Executive headed down to Brisbane to catch up with Affiliate Club the Eastern Suburbs Tigers while they held a day of trial games. The Day included mixed teams from Easts aswell as North Ipswich, Ipswich Jets and the Melbourne Storm.  Our 2013 Halfback Connor Jones featured in the second trial of the day against Ipswich Jets and picked up the first try of the match. Unfortunately for Connor his side was dominated losing 28-8. East Tigers Intrust Cup side got revenge against the Melbourne Storm wining by a try. Both sides had several key players out.

A great day of footy with the dark clouds holding of except a few patches of light rain. We were able to catch up with some of the Storm Players and Staff aswell as East Tigers Head Coach Craig Ingebrigsten for some photo opportunities promoting the Emerald Tigers in 2014.
