  • Rd 9 vs Clermont Bears

Tigers travelled to Clermont hoping to avenge their earlier season loss to the undefeated Bears. Tigers were brimming with confidence after their dominance in the first half against 2nd on the table Bluff the previous but it didn’t continue onto the field with Clermont jumping out of the blocks to an 12-0 lead after 7 mins.

With both sides trying to assert dominance the game was halted with a serious leg injury to Tigers 2nd Rower Jordon Parekura which he was transported from the field by Ambulance. After the resumption of play and the Coach Chris Catip  the boys were finally kicking into gear. Tigers put 3 tries on through Austin(2),Downie(1) to trail 18-16 at the break.

2 mins into the second half the Bears broke the line and went to an 8 point lead. With some strond defence from both teams the points dried up for a period. Once the scoring resumed Clermont got out to 28 whist after 2 disallowed tries the Tigers posted points with 8 mins to go. The score was 28-22 to the home team. Ricky O’Donnell went over in the corner and the try went unconverted leaving the Tigers 2 points adrift until 40secs from fulltime where Ray Downie converted a penalty goal to draw the match level and finish the game.

Tigers would like to wish Jordan Parekura all the best with his recovery.

  • Rd 8 vs Bluff Rabbitohs

Tigers travelled over to Bluff after a 38 point win over Springsure the previous week. Missing 5 of the starting side a lot of the depth was shown. Tigers conceded an early 4 pointer before putting on 4 unconverted tries to lead at the break. Half Time score was 16-10 to the visitors. Shortly after the break Bluff had a purple patch of possession after Tigers were hit with multiple penalties and Bluff capitilised putting on 3 quick tries to make it 28-16. After a 8 minute stalemate Bluff once again scored out wide with a controversial try being awarded. At 32-16 the boys fought hard and scored again late in the game. In the end Bluff broke the Tigers back 3 mins out from full time with another and conversion leaving the final score at 38-22.

  • Rd 6 vs Blackwater Crushers

Our clash against the Crushers was a shaky one as we had alot of team changes in the fina 2 hours before the match. We had a few drop out with illness on the day. Added into the squad late was u18’s Connor Jones and making his debut Koby Scott.

The game started off with hard hits and good stucture from both sides.Neither team looked like budging and the half time score was level at 10 a piece. Blackwater had the considerable size advantage but look disjointed at times with the fowards. The smaller Tigers pack hed their shape well and chipped away at the defence.

Tigers showed good movement in the first 20 mins of the second half and skipped away to a 24-10 lead. Some ill-discipline and foundamental mistakes from the Tigers let the Crushers back in the match and with 9 minutes to go it was once again level at 24 all.

Field Goal shots were taken by either side but none succesful. It came down to a massive bomb put up by Ray Downie where Blackwaters fullback fumbled and Connor Jones picked up the loose ball and scooted 30m to seal the game 28-24.

  • Rd 5 vs Fitzroy Gracemere-Ladies

It was a very emotional day for the Emerald Women’s Tigers, with one of their players playing their last game before moving overseas. Laura Richards (Emerald) lead her team out onto McIndoe Park for the last time and played an amazing match. All of the girls came together as a team and really showed how much they have improved and what they really have to offer in this competition. The girls currently in 3rd position in the CQ Women’s Competition definitely went out there to prove that they are a threat and can tackle any obstacle in front of them.

The final score ended at 50 – 4 in favour of the Emerald Tigers. Laura Richards was awarded the 3 points for the match for her consistent, strong defence and leadership skills. Our forward pack really gave the team the impact & lift that we needed and this was noticed by all with both Wendy Sullivan (Tieri) and Stacey Atkinson (Middlemount) were awarded 2 and 1 points for their explosive attack in the middle of the paddock. Both Denise Chaplin (Springsure) and Amy O’Loughlin (Emerald) were voted as players player for their impressive attacking skills.

It is so great to see that we can all come from such a wide distance (one of our players even travels from Townsville) and form as a team and display a game of footy that displays raw talent and team work. As captain of this team, I am so proud to be playing football with such an inspirational group of girls. Although none of this would be possible without the backing of the Emerald Tigers, our sponsors and our very vocal supporters – thank you, it is greatly appreciated.

There is plenty of Supporters gear for sale, if you are interested in supporting the girls – all funds raised go towards the set up costs of the 2014 season. Please contact Rheenie 0428 181 886 for any inquiries.

The girls have a few weeks off, with their next game being held in Yeppoon on Saturday 22nd June. That will be the last game of the season, with the final series beginning on 29th June 2013. Get behind the girls and give them your support and let’s make it to the major finals!!

  • Rd 4 vs Gladstone Raidettes-Ladies

We always dread the long bus drive down to Gladstone, but it was made twice as bad with the numerous Road Works along the Bruce Highway (yes, even operating on a Sunday). The girls arrived at the fields with only 10 minutes to get strapping completed, dressed and a quick warm up done. It turned out to work wonders for the team as no one had the chance to get nervous and this really showed in their performance. Due to injury I (Rheenie) was forced to sit on the bench, which was devastating for me, but great to be able to watch the girls from the sideline & step in as coach.

All of the girls really stood up to the challenge of playing the competition leaders on home turf and showed how much of a threat our team can be. This showed in the final score with the Tigers girls losing 20 – 18 (unfortunately missing too many of our conversions) in a very close match. The game played out with both teams scoring try for try (4 apiece) and some of our more experienced (2nd year) players really took their game to the next level in both defence and attack. Maria Rawiri (Emerald), who backed up after playing her first stint in representative football the previous weekend, was awarded the 3 points for the game for her very impressive attack and strong defence skills. Laura Richards (Emerald) was awarded the 2 points for her dedication and commitment to cover defence and Karissa Deakin (Tannum Sands) received 1 point for her explosive line breaks. Maria and Laura were also awarded the Players Player for the match.

The Tigers are definitely going to be a team to watch out for in this competition – their skills and knowledge have improved immensely over the past couple of weeks and it is really starting to show in our games. Once again I was so proud of how these girls played and couldn’t ask for a more committed, dedicated and inspirational team. Keep up the good work girls and the rewards will come!

  • Rd 6 vs Blackwater Crushers

Tigers sealed a 6 point win with a late try to Connor Jones after he grab a loose ball and scurried 30m to steal the game. It was converted by Ray Ebsworth. There was still 3 mins to go after the Try but the Green and Whites defence held on. Koby Scott debuted well after a last minute call up. He made 14 tackles in the second half after beating his U18’s oppenent by more than 50 3 hours earlier. Connor Jones also backed up. Whetu Austin scored in his first game back from East Tigers. Whetu is on loan from Easts Colts in Brisbane.  The win will benifit the Tigers as the 2 gringing games they have had so far ended up in 4 and 8 point losses. The lads are away at Springsure next week as they face the Mountainmen for the first time in 2 years.

  • Rd 5 vs Middlemount Panthers

Tigers headed to Middlemount missing key players and returned home with a 4 point loss. Middlemounts Ryan Hansell scored of the scrum base with 47 secs to go after a controversial knock-on ruling. The converson was good which left the final score 30-26. Whilst missing key players the Tigers unearthed some good new talent. Exciting times ahead for the Tigers as the add depth to their squad. Billy Neal and Henry Watkins(vc) lead the boys well with Kyle Mattingley and Matt Langby suring up the defence in the middle and Ray Ebsworth putting his body on the line against Pathers Big Front Rowers. An unlucky loss to the see Tigers sitting 5th on the ladder after 5 rounds and will be hoping to knock over Blackwater at home next week to keep in touch with the top 4.

  • Rd 4 vs Peak Downs Pirates

Tigers showed a controlled and mostly disciplined display at the weekend accounting for last years Premiers the Pirates 44-16. Tigers got out of the blocks after a first 15 minute stalemate which either side failed to score. It was one way traffic for the rest of the match. The smaller foward pack worked well together and layed a platform for backs to put the points on. Not our greatest day in the kicking department but it was a 9 tries to 3 win.

Halves Ray Downie and Connor Jones lead the boys around well. Jones also picked up 2 tries and 3 goals for his 2nd A grade game. Billy Neal tackled all day(33) especially in the second half(18) and Wade Campbell not far behind(16). Jake Madsen excelled at the back filling in for incumbent Ray Ebsworth who had to pull out due to illness. Clint Day also showed some great hole running bagging tries.

Josh Johnston debuted well for the Tigers with some aggresive defence and will be one to watch.

  • Rd 3 vs Cowboys Duroux Shield

The Tigers mens weren’t as lucky as the ladies going down to cross town rivals the Cowboys 38-28. With the match hanging in th balance for the last 10 mins it was the blue and white’s that held on. The was some really good footy played by both sides aswell as some lapses in defence. The tries seem to come in 2’s and 3’s as each side took turns at asserting dominance. Connor Jones made his A Grade debut in the loss. He held his own in his first outing and will be someone to watch in future. Billy Neal made a successful return to the paddock picking up 1 point(3,2,1) from the bench. Tigers will be hoping to knock over last years premiers Peak Downs Pirates this Sunday at 3.30pm straight after the ladies game at McIndoe Park.
