  • Rd 5 vs Fitzroy Gracemere-Ladies

It was a very emotional day for the Emerald Women’s Tigers, with one of their players playing their last game before moving overseas. Laura Richards (Emerald) lead her team out onto McIndoe Park for the last time and played an amazing match. All of the girls came together as a team and really showed how much they have improved and what they really have to offer in this competition. The girls currently in 3rd position in the CQ Women’s Competition definitely went out there to prove that they are a threat and can tackle any obstacle in front of them.

The final score ended at 50 – 4 in favour of the Emerald Tigers. Laura Richards was awarded the 3 points for the match for her consistent, strong defence and leadership skills. Our forward pack really gave the team the impact & lift that we needed and this was noticed by all with both Wendy Sullivan (Tieri) and Stacey Atkinson (Middlemount) were awarded 2 and 1 points for their explosive attack in the middle of the paddock. Both Denise Chaplin (Springsure) and Amy O’Loughlin (Emerald) were voted as players player for their impressive attacking skills.

It is so great to see that we can all come from such a wide distance (one of our players even travels from Townsville) and form as a team and display a game of footy that displays raw talent and team work. As captain of this team, I am so proud to be playing football with such an inspirational group of girls. Although none of this would be possible without the backing of the Emerald Tigers, our sponsors and our very vocal supporters – thank you, it is greatly appreciated.

There is plenty of Supporters gear for sale, if you are interested in supporting the girls – all funds raised go towards the set up costs of the 2014 season. Please contact Rheenie 0428 181 886 for any inquiries.

The girls have a few weeks off, with their next game being held in Yeppoon on Saturday 22nd June. That will be the last game of the season, with the final series beginning on 29th June 2013. Get behind the girls and give them your support and let’s make it to the major finals!!

  • Rd 4 vs Gladstone Raidettes-Ladies

We always dread the long bus drive down to Gladstone, but it was made twice as bad with the numerous Road Works along the Bruce Highway (yes, even operating on a Sunday). The girls arrived at the fields with only 10 minutes to get strapping completed, dressed and a quick warm up done. It turned out to work wonders for the team as no one had the chance to get nervous and this really showed in their performance. Due to injury I (Rheenie) was forced to sit on the bench, which was devastating for me, but great to be able to watch the girls from the sideline & step in as coach.

All of the girls really stood up to the challenge of playing the competition leaders on home turf and showed how much of a threat our team can be. This showed in the final score with the Tigers girls losing 20 – 18 (unfortunately missing too many of our conversions) in a very close match. The game played out with both teams scoring try for try (4 apiece) and some of our more experienced (2nd year) players really took their game to the next level in both defence and attack. Maria Rawiri (Emerald), who backed up after playing her first stint in representative football the previous weekend, was awarded the 3 points for the game for her very impressive attack and strong defence skills. Laura Richards (Emerald) was awarded the 2 points for her dedication and commitment to cover defence and Karissa Deakin (Tannum Sands) received 1 point for her explosive line breaks. Maria and Laura were also awarded the Players Player for the match.

The Tigers are definitely going to be a team to watch out for in this competition – their skills and knowledge have improved immensely over the past couple of weeks and it is really starting to show in our games. Once again I was so proud of how these girls played and couldn’t ask for a more committed, dedicated and inspirational team. Keep up the good work girls and the rewards will come!

Tigers will be heading to Barcaldine on the 16th March to play (trial game) against the Sand Goanna’s 6pm @ Barcaldine Showgrounds. The usual amenities will be available. Cold beer, hot food and some great footy action. The game will be an annual game between the 2 clubs with all money raised going towards Semita House in Emerald and Barcaldine Aged care.

The “Wren Cup” came about as we approached Barcaldine in 2012 for a trial but unfortunately it didn’t turn out. Both sides contain a Wren brother(twins). Emerald- Luke and Barcaldine- Mark. Both are fiercely competitive. Both are also plumbers and run their own business’s and are both the Major sponsors for each respective club. We are hoping to forge a good rivalry against the Sand Goannas and make it a fun weekend and raise some money for a good Cause, and hopefully get the first plaque on the trophy of course.

One of the lads to don the Tigers Jersey will be Ex-NRL and Queensland player PJ Marsh in the side. Will hope that having PJ in the side will draw a few more fans so we can raise more money. So if you want to see PJ back on the paddock and say G’Day to the former Maroon come down for a 6pm kickoff.
