  • Duroux Shield Loss hits home for Tigers mens

Tigers mens went down to cross town rivals Emerald Cowboys to hand back the Duroux Shield. Tigers have had a slow start to the season after losing a up to 10 players from the last years side.

The Cowboys shoot out to a 20-0 lead after some lethal attach on Cowboys Andrew Doyle side. Doyle created overlaps and set up tries but had to leave the field just on half time. With 10 minutes remaining the Tigers had rallied behind the tryline and committed on working hard to get back into it. ith some big runs from prop Meiranas Parata a few plays later Tigers crossed. They backed it up and went to the break 20-10 trailing.

The Tigers come out of the sheds firing and Isaiah Huet lunched an 80m attacking raid down the left flank scoring under the posts. Gav Power converted. 20-16. Tigers were on the prowl and scored again 4 mins later taking them out to a 22-20 lead and had the Tigers looking like they were going to shoot away with the score.

The momentum suddenly swung with the Tigers 5 penalties in under 5 mins. The second half penalty count was 7-1 to the cowboys after a 3-3 penalty count in the first half. With all of the possession the Cowboys gained the Tigers started to fatigue with missed tackles and mistakes.

The Cowboys sealed the game with a try with 4 mins to go taking the game out to 38-22.

Player Points for the night were

    3- Meiran Parata(Prop)
    2- Gavin Power(Halfback)

  • Polly Pratt Shield Win for Ladies

    image1

Saturday night saw the inaugural battle for the Polly Pratt Plate take place at McIndoe Park as a brand new rivalry between old rival clubs. The Pirtek Emerald Tigers Ladies team took on the Emerald Cowgirls in a tough match played in perfect evening conditions

Though the Cowgirls have come off a couple of comprehensive losses, the Tigers knew they wouldn’t lie down that easily as the two teams began a new conflict within Central Highlands Women’s Rugby League

There were a few big hits (top tackles going to Mari Rawiri n the lock position), barn storming runs (front rowers Nioaka Ross and Chantelle Nagel making mass metres) and foot work to mesmerise (Kelsie Parter ripped them apart through the middle during the entire game) which kept the sizeable crowd entertained during the curtain raiser

First half tries for the Tigers went to Cooper Hill (centre) and one each to second rowers Miranda Bartley and Bianca Cornelius. The Cowgirls right hand winger also scored a try, which showed that points were on offer out on the edges for the most patient and controlled side. As it were, Tigers took this one and went into the break with a lead of 16-4 (only one from three conversion attempts were successful)

The second half saw the Tigers settle into our work a bit more. Securing the ball, organising plays and shuffling defence (although our line was breached once by the big front rower Holly Skuxx running straight at me!). Tigers tries were scored by  the always reliable Kiri Sampson with a scoot from hooker, another to Hill and for the second week in a row, our little shorty, Kelsie Parter, crossed the line twice again, to bring the score out to 34-8 (conversions were only at 3 from 7 this week)

    3, 2, 1 and Players player for the Tigers went to;

3 points – Kelsie Parter (halves)

2 points – Nioaka Ross (front row)

1 point – Miranda Bartley (second row)

    Player’s player – Nioaka Ross

  • Tigers mens hope to kick start season with a Duroux Shield win

The Tigers mens will be hungry to win this weekends local derby against the Emerald Cowboys for the Duroux Shield after wining it last year. The mens have had a slow start to the season after a controversial 6 point loss to Blackwater, a big loss to Clermont and a 2 point loss to Dysart on the weekend after Dysart scoring 3 minutes before full time to snatch victory.

Tigers performances have been improving but crucial mistakes have sometimes cost them. Coach Dennis Moore and Assistant Brett Weatherley is working hard to get some results. Although there has been 3 losses posted so far the staff and team are confident that they can turn the season around in coming weeks. Kick this Saturday is 7pm at McIndoe Park. • Ladies post big win at Wren Cup

Saturday 21 March saw this year’s Pirtek Emerald Tigers Ladies team have our first hit out as a full side when we played against the Central West Fillies in Barcaldine as a part of the Wren Cup festivities for 2015. With the heat soaring well above any autumn weather I’ve ever encountered, the girls done exceptionally well to keep the tempo up, even with the odd dropped ball here and there (big thanks to the ref for pointing these out to me!) The first quarter saw the Fillies score shortly after kick off, putting us in the red against an opposition that knows full well they are a larger team than we, using their forwards to bust over the try line, forcing us on the back foot immediately. However, tries to Tamyra Hunter, Cooper Hill and Amy O’Loughlin gave us a 22-12 lead at half time and more importantly, a confidence boost that continued on throughout the entire game. The second half saw the Fillies have us camped on our try line, but stout defence, quick thinking (and even quicker legs) saw Hunter blitz down the side line for a 90m run away. Further tries came from Kelsie Parter and another from O’Loughlin, gave us the 44-12 win and a promising start to our season.

Coaches points went to; 3 – Tamyra Hunter 2 – Kiri Sampson (top tackler with 20) 1 – Amy O’Loughlin Big thanks to our helpers that came out. Brad and Jenny Whittaker, as coach and on the stats. Wendy Green for managing the team. Brenden Green and Michael Wiringi for running water. Brooke Walker for FAO and a massive thanks to Brenden for driving the bus, which is probably the worst job of them all!

Final thanks goes to the Wrens for organising another successful weekend. We look forward to next year and the years to come

(Assist A Grade Coach Brett Weatherley)

The Tigers have secured the services of Dennis Moore as head coach for the 2015 and 2016 seasons. Dennis comes to the Tigers with a wealth of experience after Assistant coach roles  with Manly Sea Eagles(04-07) and Hull FC(10) clubs aswell as coaching Australian Junior Kangaroos, Qld u17’s, u18’s, u19’s. Dennis Moore recently has been a Queensland Rugby League development officer and CEO of Aspley Devils Rugby League Club.

Tigers will be hoping to utilise Dennis’s development skills and ability to get the best out of young players with the loss of experienced players from last years squad. Although the Mens side has lost experience we are excited about the influx of youth included in the 2015 team.

Dennis will 2004 “Tiger of the year” and  former hardman Brett Weatherley as his right hand man. Brett has joined as 2015 Assistant Coach and will be a very valuable addition with his old school style. Brett has been working his way through the juniors grades as coach and is excited to work with the seniors this year.

We would like to send out a massive thanks to our 2014 coaching staff Chris Catip, Brett Winkler and Peter Moore for their hard work and time given to the Tigers.
